How Cannabis and Travel are a Catalyst for Social Change

Sebastian DeRosia

Cannabis tourism is on the rise in the United States, as travellers from all over the world visit places like Washington, Colorado, and Oregon to take advantage of their progressive cannabis laws, and enjoy a little recreational marijuana.

In the modern age, life only seems to be getting faster and faster. We are incredibly fortunate to have access to a plant that can offer a fresh, relaxed perspective on our fast-paced lives. Cannabis tourists are now coming from far and wide looking for just that. Whether they want to explore some Woodstock nostalgia, or perhaps come from a country where cannabis is still an extreme taboo and want to experiment for themselves, there are plenty of reasons why the U.S. is fast becoming the premier cannabis tourism destination in the world. People are even traveling across state lines within the country itself, often discretely since their social circles may not approve of their cannabis experimentation. What’s more, we can see people with health conditions traveling to other states to find out if cannabis could help alleviate their symptoms, and even considering permanently moving because it can be so helpful.

Just like the effects of cannabis vary from individual to individual the same can be said of the many reasons people travel to gain access to this plant. We are all unique and we all have our own reasons for use. Perhaps by valuing this personal relationship to the plant we are gaining greater awareness of our connection to the planet and its natural wonders.

Marijuana Tourism Resources:

There seems to be a very synergistic energy between cannabis and nature, could it be that as this plant grows from the earth, it has a longing to call us back to the earth. In this way Cannabis plays a vital role in restoring our health as well as our sanity. At a time when it seems we are all suffering from Nature Deficit Disorder, this does seem like a possible solution to what ails modern life.

A Personal Take: Running an Airbnb Open to Cannabis

Within the past year I opened a Cannabis-friendly Airbnb from my home in Seattle.

It has been a refreshing experience to meet people who don’t just travel here to smoke themselves into a cannabis haze, but rather take a more philosophical approach to their trip. They seem to be more driven by a desire to unplug from the hectic world we live in, slowing down their pace and realizing that prioritizing self-care and relaxation is a critical part of leading a healthy life.

I estimate about twenty percent of my Bed and Breakfast guests come to take full advantage of legal cannabis and will consume to their hearts delight. They love it the plant and the community they've worked to create. Their reverence and devotion can be seen in the joy they share in consumption and being able to partake freely. The varied experience that is the nature of this plant can be seen in the diversity of visitors I see yearly.

The experience of cannabis itself is much like traveling to a new place, too. Our realms of consciousness have been criminally underexplored since the hammer of prohibition came slamming down. The desire to explore this kind of travel is seen across the animal kingdom, not only limited to us humans, so it seems it is only natural that, as well as traveling to far-off places physically, we also have an in-built desire to explore the farther flung realms of our minds, too.

So the next time you hop on a plane, spark up a joint, or hit that vape, celebrate this connection. Remember that you are a traveler, asserting your free will as a citizen of Earth to journey when and where you like. Cannabis travelers are helping accelerate a movement of openness, connectivity and expression that has been playing out for millennia. And yet we are only at the beginning of our exploration, so I urge you to journey to your heart's delight. In your journey, as you learn and share, we all progress.
